BUYING BASICS

Understanding Precious-Metal Premiums

The price of a bullion product is more than the metal quotation. This guide explains the extra costs clearly so you can compare products on equal terms.

Spot price is the reference point

Spot price is the market reference value for immediate delivery of a metal. It changes throughout the trading day and helps buyers compare the metal content of different products.

Retail bullion rarely sells at spot because refining, minting, packaging, distribution, inventory risk and seller overhead add real costs.

Premium is the amount above spot

A product premium is the difference between its retail price and the underlying metal value. Premiums can be expressed as a dollar amount per item or as a percentage of metal value.

Smaller pieces usually carry higher percentage premiums because production and handling costs are spread across less metal. Recognizable sovereign coins may also command higher premiums than generic rounds or bars.

Compare the total delivered cost

The most useful comparison includes item price, shipping, taxes where applicable and any payment-method surcharge. A low advertised premium can be offset by expensive delivery or unfavorable return terms.

For multi-item purchases, divide the complete delivered total by the number of ounces or grams purchased to understand your effective cost per unit.

Premiums change with demand

Premiums can widen when physical demand rises faster than available inventory, even if spot price is flat. They can narrow when supply improves or demand cools.

Do not assume a historically normal premium is guaranteed. Compare several reputable sellers and similar products at the time you are ready to buy.

Think about resale spread

The resale price may be below the retail purchase price. Common, recognizable products often have clearer buyback markets, while highly specialized pieces may depend more on collector demand.

A responsible purchase considers both the entry premium and the likely ease of resale, not just the appearance of the product.
